How to maximise the support you have in place.
Starting care at home is a significant and positive step – it means support is in place, help is at hand, and independence can be maintained safely.
But once care begins, many people don’t realise that there are ways to actively shape and optimise their care experience to get even more from it.
At CI Home Care, we believe good care is more than just ticking tasks off a list – it’s about enhancing your quality of life. Here’s how you, or your loved one, can make the most of the support already in place.
1. Keep Your Care Plan Up to Date
Your care plan is the foundation of your support. It should reflect not only your medical needs, but your preferences, personality, and priorities.
Your CI Home Care team will review your care plan regularly – but don’t wait for us if something changes. Let us know if:
- You’d prefer a different time of day for visits
- Your mobility has changed
- A new health concern has arisen
- You’d like more help with something, or less help with something else
Your care is yours – we’re here to tailor it to your life.
2. Involve Family in the Process
If you have family or close friends involved in your life, keeping them informed (with your consent) can be really helpful.
We can work as a team – family members might spot small changes or feedback that helps us improve care or adjust routines. Open communication makes everyone feel reassured and supported.
3. Make Use of Your Carer’s Skills
Our Carers are trained in more than just personal care. They can support you with:
- Gentle physical activity (like a walk or seated exercises)
- Planning simple, nutritious meals
- Reminders and support with medication or appointments
- Using technology to keep in touch with loved ones (yes, we’ll help with WhatsApp or Zoom!)
- Encouragement and companionship
Not sure what your Carer can help with? Just ask – we’ll clarify what’s included in your care package.
4. Review Your Environment
One of the most overlooked parts of successful care is the home environment. Small changes can make a big difference:
- Moving essential items to easy-to-reach areas
- Adding better lighting or grab rails
- Decluttering trip hazards
- Making space for mobility aids or a perching stool in the kitchen
We’re happy to make suggestions and can work with you to make your space safer and more comfortable.
5. Build a Positive Relationship with Your Carer
Consistency and connection are key. Over time, many of our clients develop a strong rapport with their regular Carers – which makes care feel natural, not intrusive.
If something isn’t working for you – whether it’s a schedule, a task, or even a personality clash – please tell us. We’ll always listen and aim to match you with someone who suits your needs and your style.
6. Use Visits to Maintain Routines You Enjoy
Care at home isn’t just about getting by – it’s about enjoying life. We love supporting clients with:
- Preparing a favourite breakfast
- Sitting outside in the fresh air
- Getting to church, day centre or hair appointment
- Making a birthday card for a grandchild
- Helping you bake something simple, if that’s your thing!
If there’s something you’d like to keep doing with a little support, let us know. We’ll do our best to build it into your visits.
7. Communicate Openly With Your Care Manager
Our Care Managers don’t just create your plan – they stay involved. You’ll see them for regular reviews, but you’re also welcome to call us at any time.
If you’re unsure whether something can be changed, added or improved, just ask. We’re flexible, and we love hearing how things are going.
8. Plan Ahead Where Possible
Are you expecting a hospital appointment, short trip away, or guests staying?
Let us know in advance so we can plan around it. We’re happy to adjust visit times, pause care if needed (with appropriate notice), or offer extra support temporarily – such as after surgery or illness.
9. Know That It’s OK to Ask for More
Needs change – and that’s okay. Whether you start with one visit a day or a few hours a week, your care can grow with you. You can add overnight, 24/7, or even live-in care later if you need it.
Care isn’t a sign of loss – it’s a foundation that lets you continue doing the things you enjoy, safely and confidently.
In Summary: It’s Your Care – Make It Work for You
We’re here to offer more than just help – we’re here to help life feel manageable, enjoyable and yours. Care at home works best when it’s collaborative and flexible, and that’s exactly how we do things at CI Home Care.
